Commercial Landscaping Electrification: Key Insights from Richard Ogawa to Landscape Management

“Battery-powered landscaping equipment is gaining momentum, but charging infrastructure will determine how quickly contractors can make the transition." - Richard Ogawa

In a Landscape Management interview, Richard Ogawa—CEO of Gardenland Power Equipment and co-founder of TOWA—explains how the landscaping industry is rapidly transitioning from gas equipment to battery-powered fleets.

The shift is being driven by environmental regulations, including California’s ban on the sale of new gas-powered landscaping equipment starting in 2024. Large commercial clients and corporate campuses are also pushing contractors toward zero-emissions landscaping operations.

However, the biggest challenge for landscaping companies is not just the cost of battery equipment—it is charging infrastructure. Commercial crews often run dozens or even hundreds of batteries each day, and charging them overnight requires electrical capacity many businesses currently lack.

Ogawa notes that battery equipment can cost two to five times more upfront than gas equipment, making the transition especially difficult for smaller contractors.

To support electrification at scale, the industry will need universal charging systems and power management solutions that allow contractors to charge multiple battery platforms efficiently while reducing electrical upgrades.

As electrification expands across the landscaping industry, charging infrastructure will become a critical component of daily operations—similar to how fuel systems supported gas-powered fleets for decades.
